Other Greek info
All is good here in Greece for us as tourists. We did not notice much in Athens as far as the bad economy, the streets were cleaned at night, garbage collected, all traffic running smoothly, buses on time, etc. But out here in the country there are alot of businesses closed or with very little inventory. Manufacturing and construction seem to be non existent at the moment. Grasses in parks and along roads is not maintained, that sort of thing. People are friendly and helpful in their gruff, Greek way. If you ask too many questions they get frustrated, like your time is up for my patience! There are cats running around everywhere and they are skinny.
One thing we noticed in Athens tho was the subway. We paid on our way to the seafront for dinner, but there was no one to sell tickets on the way back and gates were open, so everyone was just going thru. It may have been that everyone was at the soccer match at the stadium next door!!
The fruits and vegetables are very fresh, but not much luck finding fresh fish. We had yummy moussaka in a pot yesterday, like French onion soup. The last 2 days we spent on a bus tour north of Athens, touring Delphi (as in the Oracle of Delphi), and the amazing monasteries built high up on rocks at Meteora. Pictures to follow. Now we are waiting for our KTEL bus to take us to Ioaninnia where we will spend the night and then take another bus and ferry to Corfu.
